Bharathanatyam, the ancient South Indian classical dance that known for its grace, purity, tenderness, and sculpturesque poses.The classical art form embodies the three primary ingredients of Dance - Rhythm, Rhyme and Expression.

 

This mystical art form captivated Janani just around when she turned 6 years old. Observing her keen interest in the art form, her parents enrolled her in dance class with Guru Smt Usha Datar and further on with Guru Smt Rukmini Srinivasan.

 

In 1995 Janani learnt for short period from the one of Bangalore’s renowned Guru Smt Padmini Ravi. Further more she transitioned to the “THE KIRANS” - Kiran Subramanyam and Sandhya Kiran. In their tutelage her dreams and aspirations to become a dancer began to blossom. Opportunities to perform at various avenues, teaching skills, expanding the art form came in her favor. Fortunately under their guidance and tutoring Janani performed her Arengetram in Dec 2000.

 

After her marriage she moved to one of best places in United States for Indian arts - SF Bay Area. Janani got her further training and mentoring from internationally acclaimed Guru Smt Vidhya Subramanian of Lasya Dance Company. Over the past decade under Smt Vidhya’s tutoring and mentoring Janani has performed and participated at Lasya’s notable productions and festivals. She has given many performances widely in San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Boise and solo performance in India.

 

With the finest coaching from distinguished Gurus of leading Banis (styles)such as Kalakshetra and Vazhuvoor, Janani wisely chooses both the styles appropriately in her dance numbers, performance and choreography. 

 

As an avid, ardent,  passionate dancer, Janani now performs, choreographs and teaches to young kids and adults at her dance school Nrityakalya Dance Company. Janani has directed and staged two full length prodution from Nrityakalya.Currently she is directing and working on the third production to be staged in May. www.nrityakalya.org.

She is one of the co-founders of Sanhiti - South Indian Dance Troupe, one of the leading dance troupes in the Bay Area www.sanhiti.org

 

Gifted with other artistic talents such as painting, she enjoys painting and is an active artist among Bay area art clubs. She frequently displays her art works at exhibitions and galleries. Her art works  can be viewed at www.oviyaa.net.

 

Janani holds a bachelor's degree in Microbiology. Her other hobbies include cooking, conducting fitness dancing, traveling and listening to music.
